Northeast Braces for a Super Storm Thursday, Friday

Wednesday, February 24th, 2010

The same storm that brought a gentle snowfall across Texas on Tuesday will reach the Northeast in the form of an atmospheric monster with damaging winds, blinding snow, torrential rain, huge waves and flooding.

In the hardest-hit areas, it will seem more like a “snowacane,” as a mere blizzard may not adequately describe conditions of this soon-to-be powerful nor’easter.

Wind
Wind gusts can reach 70 mph in some areas, just shy of hurricane force. Many locations in the mid-Atlantic and New England will endure gusts topping 50 mph at some point Thursday to Friday.

Syria warns: Next war will be ruinous

Sunday, February 21st, 2010

Syrian PM says if future conflict erupts it will affect “the region and beyond.”

Syrian Prime Minister Naji al-Otari on Saturday warned Israel that any new Mideast war would be catastrophic for the region and beyond.

Speaking to reporters Saturday after meeting with French Prime Minister Francois Fillon, he said that a new war will have dangerous repercussions not only in the Middle East but also on the international level.

Syria’s foreign minister warned Israel earlier this month that any new war would reach Israeli cities, to which Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman responded that the Syrian army would be defeated and its regime would collapse in any future conflict.

American Thinker: Family Breakdown and the Nation’s Pocketbook

Saturday, February 20th, 2010

In the lobby of the Department of Health and Human Services is a large bronze sculpture of a solitary woman playing with her three children. That sculpture is called “Happy Mother.”
Nothing better illustrates what’s wrong with American culture today than the philosophy behind that sculpture — that fathers are extraneous. Yet that myth is the basis of forty years of failure by the leftist research communities to honestly report on the problem of fatherless families.
Many social scientists now agree: A loving mother and father within a committed marriage is the very best foundation for the family, for the economy, and for the nation. Yet currently, about forty percent of American children are born out of wedlock. That fact affects everyone and all of American culture. Though many have tried, there is no way to separate the social and economic issues; they are intertwined. Family problems always hit our pocketbooks — hard!

Friday, February 19th, 2010

beef recallA ground beef recall first issued by a California meat company last month, has been expanded to include five times more meat after federal investigators determined that approximately 4.9 million pounds of beef and veal products were produced in unsanitary conditions that could have caused E. coli contamination.

The expansion of the Huntington Meat Packing Inc. veal, beef products and ground beef recall was announced on February 12 by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS). The original recall was announced on January 18 for 864,000 pounds of beef products after FSIS inspectors determined that some of the meat was contaminated with the E. coli O157:H7 bacterial strain.

‘The truth is, we’re still struggling to understand what this means’

Some people are seeing a flying cross, or perhaps a Star of David.

Others say it resembles a ninja-style throwing blade or even a science-fiction spaceship from such Hollywood creations as “Star Wars,” “Star Trek,” “Babylon 5″ or “The Last Starfighter.”

Feeding America: Landmark New Study Reveals Unprecedented Number of Americans Seeking Food

Friday, February 12th, 2010

46 percent Increase in U.S. Citizens Receiving Emergency Food 37 Million Americans, Including 14 Million Children, at Risk of Hunger

A landmark study released today from Feeding America, the nation’s largest domestic hunger-relief organization, reports that more than 37 million people, one in eight Americans — including 14 million children and nearly 3 million seniors — receive emergency food each year through the nation’s network of food banks and the agencies they serve. The findings represent a staggering 46 percent increase since the organization’s previously released study in 2006.

Hunger in America 2010 is the first research study to capture the significant connection between the recent economic downturn and an increased need for emergency food assistance.  The number of children and adults in need of food as a result of experiencing food insecurity has significantly increased.

U.S. Slaps New Sanctions on Iran Revolutionary Guard

Wednesday, February 10th, 2010

The Obama administration is imposing new sanctions on several affiliates of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps, targeting one person and four companies for penalties over their alleged involvement in producing and spreading weapons of mass destruction.

The White House on Wednesday slapped new sanctions on several affiliates of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corp. in response to Iran’s defiant move to bolster its uranium enrichment program to levels capable of producing an atomic bomb.

The new sanctions target one person and four companies for penalties over their alleged involvement in producing and spreading weapons of mass destruction.

The Treasury Department announced Wednesday that it would freeze the assets in U.S. jurisdictions of Revolutionary Guard Gen. Rostam Qasemi and four subsidiaries of a construction firm that he commands and was hit with U.S. sanctions in 2007. The sanctions expand existing U.S. unilateral penalties against elements of the Guard Corps, which Western intelligence believes is spearheading Iran’s nuclear and missile programs.
