Mutant fungus threatens global wheat supply: scientists

Saturday, May 29th, 2010

SAINT PETERSBURG — Scientists have identified four new strains of a wheat-killing fungus that could endanger the global food supply, according to research presented Wednesday ahead of a conference in Russia.

The mutant strains of the fungus, called Ug99, originated in Africa but are likely to spread into Asia and beyond, said the Borlaug Global Rust Initiative (BGRI), a US-based advocacy group focusing on wheat contagions.

“The new mutations — identified last year in South Africa — will make wheat crops more vulnerable as pathogens now will find new wind trajectories for migration,” BGRI said in a statement announcing the new research.

Hurricane Season Could Be Strongest Ever, Say Top Meteorologists

Thursday, May 27th, 2010

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) issues its 2010 hurricane season forecast, predicting one of the strongest seasons on record — and reiterating fears that the Gulf oil spill may be impacted by the severe weather.

Hurricane season for the western Atlantic and the Gulf of Mexico begins June 1 and lasts through Nov. 30. That’s when about 90 percent of the storms make themselves present, and the predictions for this season are grim — which could wreak further havoc on the Gulf Coast.

Obama starts massive US Air-Sea-Marine build-up opposite Iran

Saturday, May 22nd, 2010

DEBKAfile‘s military sources report a decision by the Obama administration to boost US military strength in the Mediterranean and Persian Gulf regions in the short term with an extra air and naval strike forces and 6,000 Marine and sea combatants. Carrier Strike Group 10, headed by the USS Harry S. Truman aircraft carrier, sails out of the US Navy base at Norfolk, Virginia Friday, May 21. On arrival, it will raise the number of US carriers off Iranian shores to two. Up until now, President Barack Obama kept just one aircraft carrier stationed off the coast of Iran, the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower in the Arabian Sea, in pursuit of his policy of diplomatic engagement with Tehran.

For the first time, too, the US force opposite Iran will be joined by a German warship, the frigate FGS Hessen, operating under American command.

Volatile euro drives markets down as China demands international response | Mail Online

Thursday, May 20th, 2010

If the euro fails, then Europe fails. If we do not avert this danger, then the consequences are incalculable.’

World markets fell sharply once again today amid fears over the European debt crisis – and the lack of political co-operation to contain it.

The worries left most of the world’s leading indexes now trading below where they started 2010.

The VIX index, which charts the volatility of the U.S. equities markets, is showing levels of volatility not seen since periods of the 2008/2009 crash.

They are currently on par with the instability seen in the markets after the terror attacks of September 11, 2001.

N Korea says S Korea faked evidence of torpedo attack, warns of all-out war if it is punished

Thursday, May 20th, 2010

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korea said Thursday that South Korea fabricated evidence implicating the North in a torpedo attack in order to pick on the North and any attempt at retaliating for the warship’s sinking would be answered with “all-out war.”

South Korean President Lee Myung-bak vowed “stern action” for the attack after a multinational investigation issued its long-awaited results Thursday, concluding the North fired a torpedo that sank the Cheonan navy ship March 26 near the Koreas’ tense sea border.

Cyber attack ‘could fell US within 15 minutes’ – Telegraph

Tuesday, May 11th, 2010

The US must prepare itself for a full-scale cyber attack which could cause death and destruction across the country in less than 15 minutes, the former anti-terrorism Tsar to Bill Clinton and George W Bush has warned.

Richard Clarke claims that America’s lack of preparation for the annexing of its computer system by terrorists could lead to an “electronic Pearl Harbor”.

In his warning, Mr Clarke paints a doomsday scenario in which the problems start with the collapse of one of Pentagon’s computer networks.

(Reuters) – Nearly 40 million Americans received food stamps — the latest in an ever-higher string of record enrollment that dates from December 2008 and the U.S. recession, according to a government update.

U.S.

Food stamps are the primary federal anti-hunger program, helping poor people buy food. Enrollment is highest during times of economic distress. The jobless rate was 9.9 percent, the government said on Friday.

The Agriculture Department said 39.68 million people, or 1 in 8 Americans, were enrolled for food stamps during February, an increase of 260,000 from January. USDA updated its figures on Wednesday.

New scale of disaster looms in Gulf of Mexico – Yahoo! News

Tuesday, May 11th, 2010

New scale of disaster looms in Gulf of Mexico ORLEANS, Louisiana (AFP) – Concern grew Sunday that the US Gulf coast is facing a whole new level of environmental disaster after the best short-term fix for a massive oil spill ran into serious trouble.

BP’s giant containment box lay idle on the seabed as engineers furiously tried to figure out how to stop it clogging with ice crystals.

The British energy giant, which owns the lion’s share of the leaking oil and has accepted responsibility for the clean-up, has tried to banish the notion that the dome is a “silver bullet” to end the crisis.

Moscow markets cruise missile launched from a freight container

Tuesday, May 11th, 2010

This relatively cheap, extra-smart, easy-to-use Club-K Container Missile System, which Moscow has put on the open market, allows cruise missiles concealed in freight containers to be launched from a prepositioned or moving land or sea platform. It is virtually undetectable by radar until activated. No wonder, Iran andVenezuela were keenly interested when the Club-K was put on the market at the Defense Services Asia exhibition in Malaysia this week for $15 million.

Western military experts are calling it a “real maritime fear for anyone with a waterfront.”  The container-cum-missiles, carried by a ship, fishing vessel or truck can approach a targeted coast, highway or international railway and strike behind the target’s missile defenses without alerting radar monitors or even surveillance drones and satellites.

The Food and Drug Administration said Thursday that 12 people had been hospitalized and the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said it was looking at 10 other cases probably linked to the outbreak.
