Will Washington’s Failures Lead To Second American Revolution? – IBD – Investors.com

August 2nd, 2010

The Internet is a large-scale version of the “Committees of Correspondence” that led to the first American Revolution — and with Washington’s failings now so obvious and awful, it may lead to another.

People are asking, “Is the government doing us more harm than good? Should we change what it does and the way it does it?”

Pruning the power of government begins with the imperial presidency.

EUobserver / Citigroup says only ‘United States of Europe’ will save euro

August 2nd, 2010

A Citigroup note to clients has warned that the eurozone is likely to fall apart unless the European Union’s member states fuse both on the fiscal and political level.

“Europe needs to stand up and decide if it is going to be a ‘United States of Europe’ or a ‘patchwork quilt’ of independent states,” reads a note by Tom Fitzpatrick, chief technical analyst at Citigroup in New York, first seen by Bloomberg.

America’s Dwindling Water Supply

July 24th, 2010

In 15 Years, Nearly 2 Billion People Worldwide Will Live Where Water is Scarce

(CBS) In its “Where America Stands” series, CBS News is looking at a broad spectrum of issues facing this country in the new decade.

Americans are the world’s biggest water consumers. By 9 a.m., after showering, using the bathroom, brushing our teeth and having a cup of coffee, each of us typically has used more than 30 gallons of water.

After doing the dishes – 12 gallons per load – running the washing machine – 43 gallons per load – and watering the lawn – 10 gallons per minute – by the time we go to bed, we’ve used up to 150 gallons.

The Modern Romans

July 15th, 2010

Rome fell – a fact of history!

But why? The reasons have never been fully understood. The lessons have not been learned. Many of the same basic mistakes that weakened the once mighty Roman Empire before its toppling by barbarian hordes are now being repeated in America, Britain and the Western world.

You need to understand!

This booklet contains a shocking message – a warning for our day. And unless our peoples and nations wake up and immediately alter their course, they will – in modern fashion, and much more rapidly – suffer a similar crashing downfall!

The time to support Iran’s people is now.

image

Last week, Iran’s opposition leaders Mir-Hossein Mousavi and Mehdi Karoubi canceled anti-government demonstrations timed to commemorate the anniversary of last year’s disputed presidential election. Secretary of the State Hillary Clinton called the cancellation “regrettable,” but missed the larger point. The reform these two men offer is not what the majority of Iranians want: They want an end to the current Islamic regime.

One year ago, the Obama administration missed an opportunity to support Iran’s uprising. They mistakenly calculated that back-door negotiations with Iran’s clerics and promises made by its rulers would bring cooperation on the nuclear issue. The Americans were duped and now find themselves grasping for another chance to support an Iranian uprising.

American Thinker: Israel, the Worlds Dirty Harry

June 9th, 2010

With the recent “peace flotilla” incident, we have yet another Arab-Israeli dust-up. It’s been going on as long as I’ve been alive, and we can expect “more of the same” for the foreseeable future.

I reflexively side with Israel — every time. Why do I, though? I am not a Jew. I don’t know many Jews, either. I have a couple of Jewish acquaintances, but no close Jewish friends.

What about national security? For all the talk we hear about how Israel is an “ally” of the U.S., the fact is that we have no American military bases there, and American troops have never fought alongside Israelis in any of the numerous Arab-Israeli wars. Unlike Muslim Turkey and Muslim Albania, Israel is not a member of the NATO collective-security alliance. And of course, Israel has no oil to sell us, unlike the Kuwaitis or the Saudis, both of whom we have fought to defend.

Nine meals from anarchy: What the coming food collapse means for civilization

June 4th, 2010

NaturalNews) A growing reliance on imported food and other necessities is making First World nations such as the United Kingdom increasingly vulnerable to social collapse, warns Andrew Simms, policy director of the “think-and-do tank” of the New Economic Foundation, writing in The Guardian.

“Events are revealing that many of the things we take for granted, like bank accounts, fuel and food, are vulnerable,” he writes. “If we value civilization, the litmus test for economic success should not be short-term profitability, but resilience in the face of climatic extremes and resource shortages.”

Simms notes that the assumptions of the free market have led to an economic system focused on producing the greatest cost savings rather than the greatest sustainability. This has led many First World countries to turn away from producing food domestically in favor of cheaper (and more profitable) imports.

Mutant fungus threatens global wheat supply: scientists

May 29th, 2010

SAINT PETERSBURG — Scientists have identified four new strains of a wheat-killing fungus that could endanger the global food supply, according to research presented Wednesday ahead of a conference in Russia.

The mutant strains of the fungus, called Ug99, originated in Africa but are likely to spread into Asia and beyond, said the Borlaug Global Rust Initiative (BGRI), a US-based advocacy group focusing on wheat contagions.

“The new mutations — identified last year in South Africa — will make wheat crops more vulnerable as pathogens now will find new wind trajectories for migration,” BGRI said in a statement announcing the new research.

Hurricane Season Could Be Strongest Ever, Say Top Meteorologists

May 27th, 2010

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) issues its 2010 hurricane season forecast, predicting one of the strongest seasons on record — and reiterating fears that the Gulf oil spill may be impacted by the severe weather.

Hurricane season for the western Atlantic and the Gulf of Mexico begins June 1 and lasts through Nov. 30. That’s when about 90 percent of the storms make themselves present, and the predictions for this season are grim — which could wreak further havoc on the Gulf Coast.
