A Pope for the Melancholy Modern Age

pope-benedictIVWhy is a reactionary Bavarian anti-modernist in white robes so fascinating to the enlightened intellectuals among us? The riddle that is Joseph "Sepp" Ratzinger, aka Benedict XVI.

The man has everything needed to induce weeping and gnashing of teeth in the most hardened left-wing liberal.

He has put an end to liberation theology. He despises rock and pop music, even if people pray along with it. He has ruled out ecumenical services and stubbornly refuses to allow divorcees to take communion. He fraternizes with the anti-modernist Lefebvre disciples and pro-lifers, but gay priests are banished from the seminaries. And to top it off, all this power is expressed in a slightly effeminate, old man's voice: "Cari fratelli e sorelle ..."

New rules for the
Middle East game - E.U. taking over part of U.S. role

Although a full membership is not in the cards at the moment, the EU becoming Israel's second closest strategic ally

euflag

The current discussions about the future of American foreign policy in the Middle East touch directly upon Israel-U.S. relations. U.S. policymakers, however, have not yet given enough consideration to the unprecedented weight that the European Union increasingly exerts in the region. In the case of Israel as well as on other U.S. fronts, no durable progress is reachable without the agreement, not to say the active involvement, of the slowly uniting Europe.

A historic window of opportunity may be brought on by the development of the EU over the past decades, the escalation of the conflict in the Middle East to include a nuclear threat, and the volatility of the U.S. role in the region. In view of this, the United States should realize the strategic value of gradually integrating Israel into the European Union. Although a full membership is not in the cards at the moment, the EU becoming Israel's second closest strategic ally, alongside the U.S., is in everybody's best interests. Over the next decade or two, relations between the U.S., the EU and Israel should be progressively formulated anew.

Castle and Sky

While Comet McNaught ruled southern skies, last week's conjunction of the Moon and Venus could be enjoyed by denizens of both hemispheres of planet Earth. The two more commonly viewed celestial beacons produced this lovely twilight scene, recorded last Saturday in skies above Almodovar near Cordoba in southern Spain. Brilliant Venus and a slender crescent Moon seem to overlook the small town, along with a well-lit Castle Almodovar. The impressive castle's construction began in the 700s on the strategic site of a Roman fort. It was extensively restored in the 20th century.

The healing power of honey: From burns to weak bones, raw honey can help

honey(NewsTarget) Raw honey – which has not been pasteurized or filtered, and ideally taken directly from the hive – is a treasure chest of nutritional value and medicinal remedies. It contains an abundance of vitamins and minerals and is a natural and powerful medicine, both internally and externally.

The list of honey's beneficial functions is a long one. Honey increases calcium absorption; can increase hemoglobin count and treat or prevent anemia caused by nutritional factors; can help arthritic joints, when combined with apple cider vinegar; fights colds and respiratory infections of all kinds; can help to boost gastrointestinal ulcer healing; works as a natural and gentle laxative; aids constipation, allergies and obesity; provides an array of vitamins and minerals; and supplies instant energy without the insulin surge caused by white sugar. Many have found raw honey helpful for its positive effects against allergies and hay fever, and one or two teaspoons last thing at night can help with insomnia. As an antiseptic, honey is also a drawing agent for poisons from bites or stings or infected wounds, and has outperformed antibiotics in treatments for stomach ulcerations, gangrene, surgical wound infections, surgical incisions and the protection of skin grafts, corneas, blood vessels and bones during storage and shipment.

Virulent TB in South Africa may imperil millions

tb-africaJOHANNESBURG: More than a year after a virulent strain of tuberculosis killed 52 of 53 infected patients in a rural South African hospital, experts here and abroad say the disease has most likely spread to neighboring countries, and some say urgent action is essential to halt its advance.

Several expressed concern at what they called South Africa's sluggish response to a health emergency that, left unchecked, could prove hugely expensive to contain and could threaten millions across sub-Saharan Africa.

Newsbriefs

The Israeli government is building a massive war bunker in the hills outside Jerusalem – a refuge for top government officials in the event of a biological, chemical or nuclear attack.

The maze of tunnels and underground rooms is scheduled to be completed in the next year or two as fears of an attack from Iran intensify, the Baltimore Sun reported.

mexican-economyWe hear all sorts of solutions for ending illegal immigration. Build a wall! Beef up border security! Fine employers, and create a massive guest-worker program. Or America could insist on tamper-proof identification cards, or detention, deportation or even amnesty for some illegal aliens — or all of these measures somehow combined.

But ultimately the solution lies in the hope that a Tijuana might become as prosperous as a San Diego — now a few miles away but a world apart.

alberto-gonzalesIn one of the most chilling public statements ever made by a U.S. Attorney General, Alberto Gonzales questioned whether the U.S. Constitution grants habeas corpus rights of a fair trial to every American.

Responding to questions from Sen. Arlen Specter at a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on Jan. 18, Gonzales argued that the Constitution doesn’t explicitly bestow habeas corpus rights; it merely says when the so-called Great Writ can be suspended.

THE DESTRUCTION OF THE UNITED STATES

global_analysis

History teaches that all nations, like all individuals, have a beginning and an end. No country is immortal. No nation is invincible. To make the point less delicately, America will one day cease to exist. And it may be useful, especially given the multiple crises now developing, to contemplate the mortality of the world’s most powerful country. What would the world be like without the United States? Would it be more violent or less violent? Would it be richer or poorer? Would there be more dictatorships in the world, or fewer, more freedom or more tyranny? The answers you give on these questions, if you are liable to have any answers, are ideologically defining.

There are those who claim that America’s destruction would be a good thing. The destroyers of America, by this reasoning, would be liberators and heroes. If we attempt to look at the case objectively, it is hard to think of America’s chief rivals for power as “liberators” in any sense of the word. China is a communist dictatorship and Russia is governed by thugs.

Who or What is the Prophetic Beast?

prophetic-beast

Who or what is the “beast” of the Apocalypse, or book of Revelation, chapters 13 and 17? What does Bible prophecy reveal about world events now leading to Armageddon and the end of this age? This two-part booklet deals with governments and wars that will bring this world to its final end.

Bible prophecy reveals events of our time and world-shaking events soon to change your life. A major world-shaking event is foretold in the symbolic language of a mysterious world-dominating wild beast.

The Bible is God’s book of history, prophecy and revealed knowledge of God’s purpose and master plan for humanity from its beginning on into eternity. But the Bible is primarily a book about the chosen nation of Israel, and other nations that have come into direct contact with Israel.

Master of Transport

german-transportLONDON/MOSK AU/DUBAI/BERLI N(Own report) - The German Railroad Corp.'s rise to a predominating position in European Rail traffic is encountering resistance in Great Britain. The director of the German Railroad, Hartmut Mehdorn, seeks to use the billions in proceeds generated by the forthcoming privatization of the enterprise, to buy up the rail companies in several EU countries. If Brussels does not intervene to stop this sort of state subsidy, very soon one will be confronted with "monstrous European rail monopolists", voices in London are warning. The planned expansion of the German Railroad Corp. is part of a state subventioned, comprehensive development of the German logistical economy, that will be in line with the orientation of the booming German foreign trade. Currently Berlin is pursuing the logistics business in Middle Eastern countries as well as in Russia. Whereas the Persian Gulf has become the turntable for exports to the Arab world, the Russian Federation is considered the "corridor" for overland transport to China - including weapons supplies to the Afghan theater of operations. With additional billions, the German government is financing the expansion of German maritime trade as well. The objective is for Germany to obtain the predominating global position in the transport of merchandise - "the world champion in transport".

Officials on both sides agreed in November to promote the port calls and are hoping to see them happen "as soon as possible," the official said.
