In approving the deployment of Tornado jets to Afghanistan, but only for reconnaissance purposes, the German cabinet has revealed the full extent of Germany's schizophrenic Afghanistan policy. This double game has to stop. The chancellor should finally say it like it is: Germany is at war.
The German government approved the deployment of Tornado jets to Afghanistan on Wednesday. "Are we now at war?" the tabloid Bild wrote, clearly hedging its bets. German Chancellor Angela Merkel should be honest enough to answer this question with a clear "Yes." While she's at it, she should add that this has been the case for the last five years.

Have you noticed virtually all speculation the U.S. might militarily intervene to prevent Iran from becoming a full-fledged nuclear power has ceased?
With the Bush administration unable or unwilling to defeat the Iran-backed enemy in Iraq, any thought of widening U.S. military involvement in the Middle East has dissipated. There is hardly enough American political will to sustain the fight in Iraq, let alone political capital for a pre-emptive strike against Iran.
Recordings Reveal Calif. Governor Comparing His Youth In Austria With Proposed Mexico Border Fence
(AP) Recordings of Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger reveal the Republican comparing his post-World War II upbringing in Austria with plans to build a border fence with Mexico, a proposal he has opposed.
"We had the Berlin Wall; we had walls everywhere. But we always looked at the wall as kind of like the outside of the wall is the enemy," he said. "Are we looking at Mexico as the enemy? No, it's not. These are our trading partners."

MILWAU.K.EE, Wis. (AP) — A blast of bitter cold that spread below-zero temperatures across Illinois and through the northern Plains eased up ever-so-slightly Tuesday. But firefighters still used propane torches to melt frozen hydrants, city crews responded to frozen pipes and more schools were canceled.
At least six deaths across the northern Plains were linked to the cold weather.

Astronomy Picture of the Day
Alborz Mountains in Moonlight
On January 25th, light from a first quarter Moon illuminated this dreamlike landscape looking across the rugged, snow-covered peaks of the Alborz Mountain Range in northern Iran. The stunning sky is filled with stars, including the yellow-tinged Betelgeuse at the shoulder of Orion. Sirius, alpha star of Canis Major and the brightest star in planet Earth's night, stands above and left of picture center. The eerie glow along the Haraz valley in the foreground is light from cars traveling a highway leading from Tehran to the Caspian Sea.
Rich industrialised nations must take the lead in cutting greenhouse gases since they bear the “unshirkable responsibility” for causing global warming, a Chinese official said on Tuesday.
The comments by a foreign ministry spokeswoman underscore China’s determination not to allow international action on climate change to undermine its economic development.

Mohamed ElBaradei: "A durable, peaceful solution will not come through pressure only."
With Iran now threatening America with new missiles and the United States hunting down agents of the mullahs in Iraq, the conflict in the Middle East is again threatening to escalate. Nobel laureate Mohamed ElBaradei warns in a SPIEGEL ONLINE interview: "The Middle East is in the worst condition I have ever seen."
SPIEGEL ONLINE: The United States government is threatening to capture or kill Iranian agents in Iraq and Tehran has announced it will install thousands of centrifuges for the enrichment of uranium in Natanz. Are we witnessing a dramatic escalation of the conflict?

BAGHDAD, Iraq - Gunmen wearing Iraqi army uniforms seized an Iranian diplomat as he drove through central Baghdad, officials said Tuesday. Iran said it held the United States responsible for the diplomat's "safety and life."
One Iraqi government official said the Iranian diplomat was detained Sunday by an Iraqi army unit that reports directly to the U.S. military. A military spokesman denied any U.S. troops or Iraqis that report to them were involved.

JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) - Horse-drawn carts rescued residents from flood-stricken districts in the Indonesian capital on Monday after flooding burst riverbanks, killing at least 29 people and forcing some 340,000 to flee their homes in recent days.
Clearer skies brought some relief on Monday, and witnesses said floodwaters were receding in several areas while levels at key rivers were dropping.

Biblical Perspective
Who or what is the “beast” of the Apocalypse, or book of Revelation, chapters 13 and 17? What does Bible prophecy reveal about world events now leading to Armageddon and the end of this age? This two-part booklet deals with governments and wars that will bring this world to its final end.
Bible prophecy reveals events of our time and world-shaking events soon to change your life. A major world-shaking event is foretold in the symbolic language of a mysterious world-dominating wild beast.
The Bible is God’s book of history, prophecy and revealed knowledge of God’s purpose and master plan for humanity from its beginning on into eternity. But the Bible is primarily a book about the chosen nation of Israel, and other nations that have come into direct contact with Israel.

“Reality therapy,” declared Time magazine’s Michael Duffy with satisfaction. “A chance to think anew,” added Newsweek’s Jon Meacham. These and similarly warm words of welcome from organs of respectable opinion greeted the December arrival of the long-awaited report of the Iraq Study Group (ISG), with its 79 prescriptions for U.S. policy in the Middle East. The sense of relief was palpable. With neoconservatism supposedly repudiated by the “fiasco” of Iraq, the backing of a wise man’s council composed equally of Republicans and Democrats, and a friendly media breeze in its sails, the ISG report was heralded not just as a fresh perspective on Iraq but as offering, at last, a new and blessedly different type of foreign policy for a country tired both of foreign adventures and of the adventurist President conducting them.
But the ISG’s moment turned out to be exceedingly short-lived. A scant two months later, does anyone, from the Bush White House to the new Democratic Congress to the mainstream American media to the world at large, seriously pay it heed? The ISG recommended against committing more U.S. troops in Iraq; instead, the administration plans to deploy tens of thousands of fresh GI’s to secure Baghdad and its environs. The ISG counseled the administration to engage Syria and especially Iran in a “New Diplomatic Offensive”; British Prime Minister Tony Blair wasted no time observing that Iran is a “deeply extreme regime, and it is hostile to our interests.” The ISG suggested embedding American troops in Iraqi military units; Iraq’s president, Jalal Talabani, called the idea “dangerous” and the rest of the report “an insult to the people of Iraq.” The ISG urged yet another big push for a comprehensive Arab-Israeli settlement, including the establishment of a Palestinian government of national unity; the Palestinians may be too preoccupied with killing each other to play ball. And so on.
