US contingency plans for air strikes on Iran extend beyond nuclear sites and include most of the country's military infrastructure, the BBC has learned.
It is understood that any such attack - if ordered - would target Iranian air bases, naval bases, missile facilities and command-and-control centres.

JERUSALEM, ISRAEL — Security in Jerusalem has been raised to the second highest alert level as a precaution against unrest around the Temple Mount. A story issued by United Press International (UPI) said, “After some of the worst rioting in Jerusalem in several years, 3,000 police officers were on guard around the Temple Mount because of threats over the construction of a ramp to the area from the Western Wall plaza.
"Even entry to Friday prayers at the al-Aksa mosque was restricted to the 50-and-older population, Israeli National News reported.

Some years ago, I was lucky enough to buy my dream car. It was a low white sports model with pop-up headlights. Within ten minutes of my gleefully driving it out of the dealer’s showroom I found myself wedged in traffic with a four-wheel-drive slowly backing into me.
The driver was seated high up. He couldn’t see me and was oblivious to my frantic use of the horn. You can guess the rest. Whenever I think of Iran I’m reminded of that trauma and my inability to prevent it.

Iran Launches Large-Scale War Games
TEHRAN, Iran (AP) -- Iran began its largest war games in almost a year Monday, just two days ahead of a U.N. Security Council deadline for Iran to halt uranium enrichment or face further economic sanctions.
The elite Revolutionary Guards began three days of ground maneuvers, state-run media reported Monday.
State television said the exercise is the biggest since last March and is taking place in 16 of Iran's 30 provinces. The broadcast said an estimated 60,000 troops are participating in the maneuvers.
"All weapons possessed by the Guards' ground force ... including new weapons, will be tested during the war games," Gen. Mohammad Reza Zahedi, commander of the Guards' ground force, was quoted by the official Islamic Republic News Agency as saying Monday.

What to Believe in if Not in God?
Just what do non-believers believe in? Despite all the tempting spiritual goodies our world offers, enlightened skeptics still seek to practice a secular, humanist morality. But the lure is growing hard to resist: Even pious Catholics are starting to dream of reincarnation.
Just what do non-believers believe in?
The legendary Spanish movie director Luis Buñuel fantasized about taking leave of his earthly body with one final twist:
I ask all those old friends who, like me, are dyed-in-the-wool atheists to drop by. Filled with sorrow, they assemble around my bed. Then the priest I've summoned arrives. My friends watch in horror as I confess, ask forgiveness for all my sins, and receive the last rites. Then I turn toward the wall - and die.
This last laugh underscores just how seriously the anarchical left-winger took Christian rituals; for Buñuel, the charade of seeing the light while on his deathbed was the ultimate parting shot.

CROSS CITY -- In the piney flatlands of Dixie County -- a place where churches easily outnumber traffic lights -- Florida's latest battle between God and government is being fought on the steps of a 4-decade-old courthouse.
At the top of the steps stands a 6-ton piece of granite inscribed with the Ten Commandments and the admonition, "Love God and Keep His Commandments."

M16: Pillars of Creation
It has become one of the most famous images of modern times. This image, taken with the Hubble Space Telescope in 1995, shows evaporating gaseous globules (EGGs) emerging from pillars of molecular hydrogen gas and dust. The giant pillars are light years in length and are so dense that interior gas contracts gravitationally to form stars. At each pillars' end, the intense radiation of bright young stars causes low density material to boil away, leaving stellar nurseries of dense EGGs exposed. The Eagle Nebula, associated with the open star cluster M16, lies about 7000 light years away. The pillars of creation were imaged recently by the orbiting Chandra X-ray Observatory, and it was found that most EGGS are not strong emitters of X-rays.

Plan B: the United State of Schwarzenegger

MEMO TO: Arnold Schwarzenegger:
Though you'll still be hobbling on crutches, Governor, your Inauguration on Friday will surely be a blast. With Donna Summer and Jennifer Holliday belting out songs at your $1.4 million party, and Paul Anka re-creating the lyrics to "My Way" to pay homage, no one can accuse you of backing away from your showbiz roots.
So let's get real, Governor -- your political career is just warming up. If your rhetoric can galvanize the California electorate, why stop there?

SEOUL (AFP) - North Korea is capable of arming its medium-range Nodong missile with a crude nuclear warhead, two US experts said in a report released Wednesday.
The report by the Washington-based Institute for Science and International Security (ISIS) also estimates that the communist state has separated enough plutonium to build about five to 12 nuclear weapons.

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Iranian patrol boats have increased attempts in the last week to assess defenses near Iraqi offshore oil terminals, U.S. military officials said Monday.
The Iranian actions at the northern end of the Persian Gulf have been a subject of operational briefings for U.S. military personnel in recent days, the officials said.
The officials -- who said they were not authorized to speak publicly on the matter -- said that the United States does not see the Iranian moves as aggressive or provocative. The assessment is that the probes are part of an Iranian effort to raise its military presence in the gulf.

Activity building to crescendo some scientists say could be cataclysmic
Solar flare activity is expected to build for the next three years to a crescendo that some scientists say could be cataclysmic, causing a telecommunication blackout that would down mobile phones and navigational systems.
"The solar flares are expected to be at its maximum intensity by the year 2010," Markus Aschwanden, a solar physicist at the Solar and Astrophysics Laboratory, Lockheed Martin Advanced Technology Center, told the Hindu News. "These solar flares and Coronal Mass Ejections from the sun have the ability to travel all the way to the earth and create a black-out of cellular phone services and navigational systems like the GPS.

Some readers claim similar experiences, while others cast doubt on phenomenon
A report by WND about claims of angelic songs caught on tape has sparked a flurry of interest in the subject of angels, with some readers reporting similar experiences, and others casting doubt on the phenomenon, even pointing to a 1970s gospel song that could be the source of one of the mysterious recordings.
The report focused on Jim Bramlett, a Christian author from Lake Mary, Fla., who posted an online collection of recordings he believes captures voices and music of God's angels in heaven.

What makes the worst lies in the Middle East acceptable?
Remember Big Daddy in the movie Cat on Hot Tin Roof? He kept walking around complaining about the “stink of mendacity” emanating from his dysfunctional family. I know how he feels, for every day the bad odor of lies, hypocrisy, and deluded appeasement wafts from the daily news.
As always, the conflict between Israel and the Arab states is the prime source of malodorous mendacity. The latest noisome news concerns the agreement hammered out in Mecca between Hamas and the Palestinian Authority. These two terrorist gangs have been killing each other for the past several weeks, but now supposedly they are going to form a “unity” government — which means they can get back to killing Israelis and pursuing their goal of cleansing the land of Jews “from the river to the sea.”

WASHINGTON, Feb. 18 — Senior leaders of Al Qaeda operating from Pakistan have re-established significant control over their once-battered worldwide terror network and over the past year have set up a band of training camps in the tribal regions near the Afghan border, according to American intelligence and counterterrorism officials.
American officials said there was mounting evidence that Osama bin Laden and his deputy, Ayman al-Zawahri, had been steadily building an operations hub in the mountainous Pakistani tribal area of North Waziristan. Until recently, the Bush administration had described Mr. bin Laden and Mr. Zawahri as detached from their followers and cut off from operational control of Al Qaeda.
