Public awareness campaign is only hope, says 3-year University of Georgia study
WASHINGTON – The most extensive study of the effects of nuclear detonations in four major U.S. cities paints a grim picture of millions of deaths, overwhelmed hospitals and loss of command-and-control capability by government.
But the three-year study by researchers at the Center for Mass Destruction Defense at the University of Georgia says a concerted effort to teach civilians what to do in the event of a nuclear attack is the best – perhaps only – thing that could save an untold number of lives that will otherwise be needlessly lost.

Ahmadinejad & Co. starring in Armageddon
"The Iranian nation will wipe the strain of regret on the foreheads of those who want to bring about injustice", President Ahmadinejad scorned at a recent rally in the province of Zanjan. Iran "will cut off the hands of any aggressor", any attack would be met with a response that is double-fold including suicide attacks across Europe and the United States, he warned. "Israel should be wiped off the map", the predominately Jewish nation "cannot survive" and is headed "towards extinction" quipped the fanatical President.
If one were to listen to his rhetoric alone, even the most astute political intellectuals would think Iran is a nation equipped with the most dangerous military arsenal capable of challenging any nation. But Iran's rhetoric has little to do with their outdated and dismal military, their fledging economy or their detested government. The root of the government's fiery tone may be traced to their Shi'te ideology messianic belief in a mysterious, mystical twelfth imam who ventured into hiding over a thousand years ago.
LONDON - More than two-thirds of the world's large cities are in areas vulnerable to global warming and rising sea levels, and millions of people are at risk of being swamped by flooding and intense storms, according to a new study released Wednesday.
In all, 634 million people live in the threatened coastal areas worldwide — defined as those lying at less than 33 feet above sea level — and the number is growing, said the study published in the journal Environment and Urbanization.

Floating Cities: The Dutch might have the answer for global warming.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel is calling for cooperation. But with whom? The more she talks, the hazier her position on the US anti-missile shield becomes. Her advisors, though, all agree that the project is bad for Europe.
Nobody can say that German Chancellor Angela Merkel is being unclear. In fact, she's made it perfectly clear that she's being obscure on purpose. Speaking last Wednesday at the 80th birthday of Germany's former foreign minister Hans-Dietrich Genscher, Angela Merkel staked out her position on how she operates politically. It is the same method Genscher, long-time master of the political hedge, liked to use.
With U.S. forces already bogged down, stretched thin, and wearing out in Iraq and Afghanistan, will the Bush administration actually launch another war against an even larger, more formidable foe: Iran? Will it dare to do so without first obtaining the constitutionally required congressional declaration of war? And will it do so in spite of the marked shift in American public opinion in favor of withdrawal from Iraq?
Denials notwithstanding, the evidence suggests that the Bush administration is fully committed to a “pre-emptive” war against Iran, possibly as early as April. Though the administration claims that it is pursuing all diplomatic means available to avert a war with Iran, President Bush has been concentrating naval, air, and missile forces on Tehran’s doorstep. Almost any provocation or pretext could now trip the hair trigger that has been put in place and unleash a full-scale war that would quickly dwarf the war in Iraq. It could also set in motion a whole series of catastrophic consequences — including major upheavals in Iraq and the Middle East, as well as 9/11-magnitude terrorist strikes in Europe and the United States.
Iran accused the British of illegally entering its waters.
Iranian forces have seized 15 British servicemen in the mouth of the waterway that separates Iran and Iraq, triggering a diplomatic crisis at a time of heightened tensions over Tehran's nuclear ambitions.
Britain said two boatloads of sailors and marines had searched a cargo ship in Iraqi waters on a UN approved mission when Iranian gunboats encircled and captured them. No shots were fired and the British servicemen were unharmed, officials said.

Iran defiantly rebuffed international demands yesterday for the release of 15 seized British naval personnel, claiming that the sailors and Royal Marines had confessed to entering its waters in an illegal act of aggression, and were now to be prosecuted in the Iranian capital.
Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman, Mohammad Ali Hosseini, claimed in a statement that the Britons were engaged 'in illegal and suspicious' activities, suggesting that Iran might claim they were spying.

TEHRAN (Reuters) - Iran will not stop its atomic work for "one second" despite a new U.N. sanctions resolution and will "adjust" its ties with those behind the measure, Iran's president said on his Web site.
The U.N. Security Council voted unanimously on Friday to impose fresh sanctions on Iran's nuclear program which the West says is a covert attempt to build an atomic arsenal. Tehran denies the charge, insisting its plans are peaceful.

Astronomy Picture of the Week
Welcome to Planet Earth
Welcome to Planet Earth, the third planet from a star named the Sun. The Earth is shaped like a sphere and composed mostly of rock. Over 70 percent of the Earth's surface is water. The planet has a relatively thin atmosphere composed mostly of nitrogen and oxygen. The above picture of Earth, dubbed Blue Marble, was taken from Apollo 17 in 1972 and features Africa and Antarctica. It is thought to be one of the most widely distributed photographs of any kind. Earth has a single large Moon that is about 1/4 of its diameter and, from the planet's surface, is seen to have almost exactly the same angular size as the Sun. With its abundance of liquid water, Earth supports a large variety of life forms, including potentially intelligent species such as dolphins and humans. Please enjoy your stay on Planet Earth.
In an interview on Friday, German Chancellor Angela Merkel praised the EU for providing the continent with 50 years of peace and prosperity. In the future, she said, the bloc needs its own army.
German Chancellor and EU President Angela Merkel has a vision for the future of the 27-member bloc. What to give someone for their 50th birthday? A nice silk tie perhaps? Maybe a gift certificate to a nice restaurant. A romantic weekend get-away with their spouse?
Or how about an army? That, at least, is what German Chancellor Angela Merkel wished for the European Union this week as the 27-member club prepares to celebrate a half century of unity on Sunday. In a Friday interview with the mass-circulation German tabloid Bild Zeitung, Merkel envisions Europe growing even closer together and more transparent. She also wants a Europe with its own fighting force.

Do you think GMOs are safe? The government has turned us into a genetic experiment without our permission and with no thought or regard for the potentially dangerous consequences. If you think the nay sayers are just a bunch of backwoods fear mongers you'd better think again. Many well respected scientists and researchers oppose genetic engineering for good reasons. Posted below are a few quotes worth reading. If you'd like to learn the full truth about this twisted satanic science from a biblical perspective, download our book "GMOs - Beware of the Coming Food Apocalypse" for free by clicking here.
Scientists have created the world's first human-sheep chimera - which has the body of a sheep and half-human organs.
The sheep have 15 per cent human cells and 85 per cent animal cells - and their evolution brings the prospect of animal organs being transplanted into humans one step closer.
OKLAHOMA CITY - A tornado as wide as two football fields carved a devastating path through an eastern Colorado town as a massive spring storm swept from the Rockies into the Plains, killing at least four people in three states, authorities said Thursday.

ABC News Learns Aircraft Carriers Sent to Region 'Hastily' After British Solders Were Seized
March 27, 2007 — The U.S. Navy is offering a huge show of military might near the location where Iran seized 15 British sailors and marines five days ago, in what is seen as a clear effort to send a message to Iran, a senior military official told ABC News' Martha Raddatz in Bahrain.
Twelve ships, 100 aircraft and 12,000 sailors are taking part in the war games designed to get the attention of Iran.
The nation's preeminent rabbinical school for Conservative Judaism announced Monday that it will now accept gay and lesbian applicants, ending an official ban that had long divided the denomination.
The decision by The Jewish Theological Seminary in Manhattan comes three months after the Conservative movement's leadership issued three sharply split decisions. One approved the ordination of gay rabbis and the conducting of same-sex commitment ceremonies; two others maintained traditional prohibitions. That split allowed proponents of each side to conclude they had Jewish law and authority on their side.

WASHINGTON, March 26 — More than 20 months ago, the United States secretly sent Iran a diplomatic protest charging that Tehran was supplying lethal roadside explosive devices to Shiite extremists in Iraq, according to American officials familiar with the message.
Explosively Formed Penetrators The July 19, 2005, protest — blandly titled “Message from the United States to the Government of Iran” — informed the Iranians that a British soldier had been killed by one of the devices in Maysan Province in eastern Iraq.

Communiqué shows SPP far more than just 'dialogue' with Canada, Mexico
While the Bush administration insists the controversial Security and Prosperity Partnership is just a dialogue with Canada and Mexico, a State Department cable released to WND shows Commerce Secretary Carlos Gutierrez pressing to implement major trilateral initiatives to help "capture the vision of North American integration."
The cable was among some 150 pages of State Department SPP documents recently released to WND under a Freedom of Information Act request.

The Atlantic hurricane season will be exceptionally active this year, according to a British forecasting group, raising the possibility that killer storms like Hurricane Katrina could again threaten the United States.
London-based forecaster Tropical Storm Risk on Tuesday said the six-month season, which begins on June 1, was expected to bring 17 tropical storms, of which nine will strengthen into hurricanes with winds of at least 74 miles per hour.

Biblical Perspective
Why is the world's best selling book held in awe by some, in passive discredit by others, and understood by virtually none?
WHY the Book of mystery nobody seems to know? Why do the many churches of traditional Christianity disagree about what the Bible says?
Have you ever PROVED whether, as the book itself purports, it is the authoritative Word of the Creator God? Rather, have you not simply assumed, from what you have heard, read or been taught, that it is either authentic, or else the religious writing of a small ancient Jewish race, groping in the darkness of human ignorance and of superstition, trying to develop a concept of God?

I believe that we're close to a tipping point right now. What happened to the Soviet Union between 1989 and 1991 could easily be happening to us for essentially the same reasons. Imperial overreach, inability to reform, rigid economic ideology. ... -- Chalmers Johnson, author of Nemesis: The Last Days of the American Republic
Has our "leadership" traded democracy for empire? Have their over-bloated egos convinced them that they are the world's newly crowned colonial kings? Author Chalmers Johnson is certainly not given to wearing rose-colored glasses. As he concludes in his newest book, Nemesis: "... my country is launched on a dangerous path that it must abandon or else face the consequences."
Johnson's well-argued, persuasive argument draws on the economic, military, and political lessons of the past, which may be just what's needed to wake up Americans in time to change course. In this interview, he explained his hopes and fears for contemporary America.
