Dissecting the ‘Chinese Miracle

china_businessThe “Chinese miracle” has been a leading economic story for several years now. The headlines are familiar: “China’s GDP Growth Fastest in Asia.” “China Overtakes United Kingdom as Fourth-Largest Economy.” “China Becomes World’s Second-Largest Energy Consumer.” “China Revises GDP Growth Rates Upward — Again.” Everywhere, one can find news articles about China, rising like a phoenix from the economic debris of its Maoist system to change and challenge the world in every way imaginable.

But just like the phoenix, the idea of an inevitable Chinese juggernaut is a myth.

Moreover, Western markets have been at least subconsciously aware of this for a decade. More than half of the $1.1 trillion in foreign direct investment that has flowed into China since 1995 has not been foreign at all, but money recirculated through tax havens by various local businessmen and governing officials looking to avoid taxation. Of the remainder, Western investment into China has remained startlingly constant at about $7 billion annually. Only Asian investors whose systems are often plagued (like Japan’s) by similar problems of profitability or (like Indonesia’s) outright collapse have been increasing their exposure in China.

Europe (finally!) gets the War on Terror

EUandIslamTwo headline-grabbing signals came from Europe this week, one from Chancellor Angela Merkel in Germany, and the other from Nicolas Sarkozy, the presidential front-runner in France. Both show a new desire to heal the Atlantic alliance, which has been badly strained in the last several years.

The media on both continents naturally blame the Bush Administration for the breach; but there is no doubt that ex-Chancellor Schroeder and outgoing President Jacques Chirac exploited and worsened policy differences for their own political gain. Their aim was to separate Europe from America, in order to build up their own power by way of the European Union. Chirac was scheming to become the first full-term president of the EU. Schroeder kept his office by scapegoating the Bush Administration. The EU Constitution was supposed to carry it all over the top, and the European Union was supposed to sail into everlasting paradise. Breaking away from America was the key.

India and U.S. Forming Alliance

indian-US-warshipsIndia and the United States are building a new alliance based on trade and common self-defense.

The new India is rebuilding its relationship with America but at the same time, New Delhi feels the threat of an old adversarial relationship along its northern border.

The relationship between China and India has been frozen since the two superpowers fought a 1962 war on the roof of the world. The two nations battled over a largely unpopulated area called Arunachal located high in the Himalaya Mountains.

THE CAPITULATION CAUCUS
APPEASEMENT IS BOOMING

Ahmadinejad-JoyfulAhmadinejad: Joyful when West cringes.April 6, 2007

IT is growing in strength and boldness. It's not a political party or a cohesive movement - but it's on the verge of becoming the most significant force in the West, one that may shape our world for years, even decades, to come.

It is the Capitulation Caucus.

Its membership consists of most nationally elected Democrats in the United States, much of the American foreign-policy elite, the balance of the U.S. media, most international bureaucrats and nongovernmental organizations and the European political elite.

New Noah's Ark ready to sail

ark
Story Highlights:

    • Dutch man uses biblical records to build model of huge boat
    • Wife wasn't in favor of project but drew up the plans anyway
    • Threat of rising seas from global warming could make location prophetic

SCHAGEN, Netherlands (AP) -- The massive central door in the side of Noah's Ark was thrown open Saturday -- you could say it was the first time in 4,000 years -- drawing a crowd of curious pilgrims and townsfolk to behold the wonder.

Of course, it's only a replica of the biblical Ark, built by Dutch creationist Johan Huibers as a testament to his faith in the literal truth of the Bible.

Reckoning by the old biblical measurements, Johan's fully functional ark is 150 cubits long, 30 cubits high and 20 cubits wide. That's two-thirds the length of a football field and as high as a three-story house.

Pakistan’s secular origin needs to be restored

pakistanPakistan has come to be a failing state in the rapid process of being Talibanised. Its internal situation as it stands today, does not offer any hope that could dispel grave apprehensions about its future. Not very long ago General Pervez Musharraf (GPM) had confessed that Quaid’s Pakistan today faces a definite demise. Indeed, no person other than him is responsible for leading the country to an imminent denouement. After all he is one of the authors of the agenda for the country’s ideological disaster.

Though he claims to be an avid fan of Kemal Ataturk and also inventor of “enlightened moderation”, Musharraf would not like Pakistan to be secular as Turkey or as Quaid wanted it to be. Truly chameleonic he actually is one of the lead players in redefining Pakistan’s secular, liberal and democratic ideology in the Wahabi mould of Islam. And his actions prove his commitment all the more. His regime has given a free hand to mullahs, their vigilantes and burqa-brigades—to run berserk. Islamabad—his seat of power—has become the worst example of their escalating terror. The armed men and women bunkered in Hafsa Seminary and Lal Masjid have very conveniently held hostage the entire capital. As compared to the freedom given to them, secular, liberal and democratic forces are being bombed, persecuted and intimidated.

Religious Freedom Threatened at UN

UNARLINGTON, VA (ANS) -- On Friday, the United Nations passed a seemingly innocuous resolution combating the “defamation of religions.” Further investigation reveals that this motion has erroneously equated legitimate discussion of religious beliefs with the incitement of religious intolerance. Under this resolution, when an individual’s religious sensitivities are offended – no matter the intent or consequences of the opinions expressed – the state must protect the religion from being defamed, or blasphemed.

Lying at the heart of this resolution is an attempt by the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC) to impose universal anti-blasphemy laws – an offence punishable by death in many countries – thereby stifling open discussion of religious beliefs.
This is a troubling development, especially since countries across the globe are increasingly using anti-blasphemy laws to punish religious minorities for questioning the beliefs of the majority religion. Such laws are no longer confined to Islamic countries; they are now being called for in democratic societies. Individuals who came to the West to escape persecution are once again in danger.

ONE CLENCHED FIST

Russa - China (Gog - Magog)Two recent items reveal Moscow’s intentions. First, President Vladimir Putin has announced that he is suspending Russia’s commitment to follow the Conventional Forces in Europe treaty (CFE). This means that Russia can move tank and motorized infantry divisions to NATO’s doorstep. Second, Russian radio news broadcasters have been ordered to make 50 percent of their reporting on Russia “positive,” and that the United States is – from now on – to be described as Russia’s enemy.

President Putin’s intentions are clear. The Cold War is to be renewed. America is the “main enemy” once again. It has been my contention, for many years, that this was the KGB’s intention from the outset. The collapse of Communism was a staged event. It was a repeat of Lenin’s New Economic Policy of the 1920s, in which Russia pretended to liberalize and move toward capitalism, drawing investment and technology from the West. I believe that the political process in Russia, from 1989 to the present, was guided to this end. In 1989 America’s leaders could not see the Kremlin’s intentions because intentions are invisible to the naked eye. And so America’s leaders were fooled. Now Russia and China will emerge together as “one clenched fist,” and their intention is to smash America.

Carina Nebula Panorama from Hubble

In one of the brightest parts of Milky Way lies a nebula where some of the oddest things occur. NGC 3372, known as the Great Nebula in Carina, is home to massive stars and changing nebula. Eta Carinae, the most energetic star in the nebula, was one of the brightest stars in the sky in the 1830s, but then faded dramatically. The Keyhole Nebula, visible left the center, houses several of the most massive stars known and has also changed its appearance. The entire Carina Nebula spans over 300 light years and lies about 7,500 light-years away in the constellation of Carina. Pictured above is the most detailed image of the Carina Nebula ever taken. The controlled color image is a composite of 48 high-resolution frames taken by the Hubble Space Telescope and released to honor its 17th anniversary. Wide-field annotated and zoomable image versions are also available.

Turks protest Islamic-rooted government

turkish-rallyISTANBUL, Turkey - Some 700,000 Turks waving the red national flag flooded central Istanbul on Sunday to demand the resignation of the government, saying the Islamic roots of Turkey's leaders threatened to destroy the country's modern foundations.

Like the protesters — who gathered for the second large anti-government demonstration in two weeks — Turkey's powerful secular military has accused Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan of tolerating radical Islamic circles

Religion gets an 'A' at U.S. colleges

universiyPeter Gomes has been at Harvard University for 37 years and says he remembers when religious people on campus felt under siege. To be seen as religious often meant being dismissed as not very bright, he said.

No longer. At Harvard these days, said Gomes, the university preacher, "There is probably more active religious life now than there has been in 100 years."

Virulent New Strain of TB Raising Fears of Pandemic

new-strain-tbBug Is Resistant to Most Available Drugs

MOSCOW -- A virulent strain of tuberculosis resistant to most available drugs is surfacing around the globe, raising fears of a pandemic that could devastate efforts to contain TB and prove deadly to people with immune-deficiency diseases such as HIV-AIDS.

Known formally as extensively drug-resistant TB, or XDR-TB, the strain has been detected in 37 countries. It arises when the bacterium that causes TB mutates because antibiotics used to combat it are carelessly administered by poorly trained doctors or patients don't take their full course of medication. Rather than being killed by the drugs, the microbe builds up resistance to them.

Now the Saudis tool up for war

dubai-arms-fairThe White House line that Iraq’s extremists are all backed by Iran is a myth, writes robert fox

This weekend, buyers from across the Gulf states and the Middle East will descend on a huge arms fair in Dubai. Sheikhs, emirs, princes and kings will be buying anything from specialised sniper ammunition by the ton, to the highest-tech surveillance gear and even the odd British Aerospace gunboat or Eurofighter.

The Arab world will use the International Defence Exhibition (IDEX), to tool up for a coming confrontation with Iran, and to arm Sunni insurgents to fight Iran's allies in Iraq, the Shia militias.

Even the Bush administration will now admit, under its collective breath of course, that Iraq is in the throes of a full-blown civil war between armed groups of its Sunni and Shia Arab communities, triggered a year ago by the destruction of the al-Laskar mosque in Samara, a revered Shia shrine.

Fiery crash collapses Bay Area freeway

highway-collapseOAKLAND, Calif. --A gasoline tanker crashed and burst into flames near the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge on Sunday, creating such intense heat that a stretch of highway melted and collapsed. Officials predicted a traffic nightmare for Bay Area commuters for weeks or months to come.

Flames shot 200 feet in the air, but the truck's driver walked away from the scene with second-degree burns. No other injuries were reported in the 3:45 a.m. crash, which officials said could have been deadly had it occurred at a busier time.

Turkey faces military crisis

EU warns generals as army threatens to step in if Islamist minister wins presidential election

Turkey came under mounting pressure from the European Union last night to rein in the influence of its generals, after the country's powerful pro-secular military threatened to intervene in the Islamic-oriented government amid growing turmoil over the election of a new President.

Olli Rehn, the European Union enlargement commissioner, who has been a keen supporter of Ankara's eventual accession to the bloc, warned the military to stay out of politics, saying the election was a 'test case' for the Turkish military's respect for democracy.

Can Antidepressants Turn You Into A Demon Possessed Killer?

Virginia Tech Shooter Took Antidepressants For His Mental Disorders

drugsI find it very disturbing that amidst all of the news about the terrible Virginia Tech shooting tragedy, the one thing I keep hearing is that the killer was on “antidepressants.” Why is it that every time someone flips out and goes over the edge on a killing spree that we discover they were on antidepressants? In the end they almost always commit suicide as well.

While I don’t think that antidepressants were the sole reason this troubled young man did what he did, they certainly had to play a part in causing him to act out his fantasies. If you have some extra time on your hands, make a list of antidepressants and go to a Borders or Barnes and Nobles book store. In there you can reference all of these drugs in a pharmaceutical drug guide and see for yourself what the adverse reactions and side effects are that are associated with the use of the drug. You will be amazed to see that suicidal tendencies, anxiety, exacerbation of psychotic symptoms, hallucinations, and other mind-altering symptoms can manifest. The other shocking thing you will discover is that there are contraindications if they are mixed with other drugs. Nobody knows what happens when you take a cocktail mix of different mind-altering drugs. It truly is a high stakes game of Roulette. Yet, you will rarely find a person prescribed only one drug. It’s almost always a mixture of drugs that they’re put on.

Too much like 1929

crash-coming
The following commentary will describe the final sequence of events that will lead to the implosion of the global economy.

As US real estate prices fall and depress US economic growth, private foreign investors begin to withdraw their capital from the US financial markets. This capital flow would by itself act to elevate the currency value of the country that it is returning to. However, the governments of developing foreign countries have policies in place to fix the exchange rate of their currencies. In order to maintain this fixed exchange rate, foreign central banks will print their own currency and exchange it for US dollars (which are then invested into US government debt). The amount of money printed and exchanged into US dollars by the foreign central bank will necessarily equate to the amount of private capital returning to the country. These central bank policies will act to artificially keep the value of the US dollar elevated and artificially keep US interest rates low.

The fixed exchange rate regime is put under great stress when private investment capital begins to leave the US, because it necessitates that the foreign central bank print much greater amounts of their own currency. This will act to boost their domestic money supply and cause their own economy and stock market to “overheat”. Additionally, in the process of exchanging increasing amounts of their own currency for US dollars, the foreign central bank rapidly builds up the amount of foreign exchange reserves that they own. The increasingly large holdings of foreign exchange reserves represent a corresponding increasingly large risk of foreign exchange losses to the central bank (should the US dollar fall in value in the future).

But if it's the potential health benefits — such as a lower risk of heart disease and certain cancers — you're after, doctors and health experts say you don't necessarily have to become a vegetarian to experience them.
