M65 is a big, beautiful spiral galaxy, the sixty-fifth object in the famous astronomical catalog compiled by 18th century cosmic tourist Charles Messier. It's also a member of a picturesque trio of large spiral galaxies known as the Leo Triplet, about 35 million light-years away. This sharp view of M65 shows off the galaxy in remarkable detail, with tightly wound spiral arms and dust lanes stretching into a core dominated by the yellowish light from an older population of stars. In fact, M65 seems to be the least disturbed of the Leo Trio, though it is close enough to be interacting gravitationally with the other two galaxies (not seen here). The great irony of this war was that it began with a hoax - a piece of faulty Soviet intelligence given to the Egyptians. On May 13, the Soviet ambassador to Cairo informed the Egyptians that Israel was massing "10 to 12 brigades" on the Syrian border in preparation for a big push against the radical regime in Damascus. There was no love lost between Syria's rulers and the charismatic leader at the helm in Cairo, Gamal Abdel Nasser. The Egyptian was the dominant Arab of his time; on the eve of the war, he stood at the peak of a career full of reversals and triumphs. A few years earlier, he had taken his burdened country into a war in Yemen that would be dubbed Nasser's Vietnam. He had brought his fervor and revolutionary gospel of Arab unity to the Arabian Peninsula, a proxy war against the ruling dynasty in Saudi Arabia. The war had dragged on, and the man who had been the master and the voice of the "Arab street" was fighting a two-front war against the Syrians on the left and the Arab monarchies on the right.

A June 2, 2007 article at USATODAY.com revealed that the size of the US Federal Government’s debt is far larger than previously realized. The article entitled Rules ‘Hiding’ Trillions in Debt stated that the real size of the US Federal Government debt last year was actually $1.3 trillion, over five times greater than the officially reported level of $248 billion. This sleight of hand is made possible because the US federal government does not use the accounting system which is required of state and local governments as well as corporations. The federal government has “hidden” from voters the real extent of its annual profligacy as its accounting “rules” allow it to hide much of the deficits in the Social Security and Medicare budgets. Keep in mind that the article reveals that the federal government ran a deficit of $1.3 trillion during the most recent, single year!

Authorities in the US are hunting for a fourth man in the alleged plot to explode jet-fuel supply tanks under New York's John F Kennedy international airport, raising fears of a new front for al-Qaida and its affiliates in the Caribbean.
Three plotters, including a former cargo handler and a former MP from Guyana, were being held in Trinidad and Brooklyn, following what US authorities said was extensive surveillance over 18 months.

China reports 18,000 pig deaths from disease outbreak
More BEIJING, June 4 (Reuters) - China said a contagious pig disease had killed 18,000 in the first five months of 2007, in Beijing's first report on the scale of an outbreak that has disrupted the pig industry and caused pork prices to soar.
A report on the agriculture ministry Web site (www.agri.gov.cn) said the blue ear disease outbreak had infected 45,000 pigs through May, with 18,000 having died.

Mystery of the Ages
Did you ever ask yourself: “Who am I? What am I? Why am I?” You are a mystery. The world about you is a mystery. Now, you can understand
Your life is engulfed in mysteries. On reflection, your very existence is a mystery. Did you simply happen by unintelligent resident earthly forces without meaning or purpose, or were you intelligently designed and created by an all-powerful God of supreme mind for a purpose that also has been hidden in mystery? In fact, the persistent tradition throughout human history about the Creator God has been such a mystery that higher education in the Western world has sought to erase the mystery by giving its virtually unanimous acceptance to the theory of evolution.
Diffusion of education did not begin among the human race until after the invention of printing in the 15th century. As education became more widespread— as intellectualism developed—as knowledge of astronomy expanded knowledge of the universe about us—thinking minds began to ask questions. What of the whole vast universe? How did it all originate? Rational, scientifically oriented minds found themselves unable to explain the developing knowledge of an expanded universe with the teaching of religion as they knew it, through the Roman Catholic Church and Protestantism, which had dominated the thinking of the Western world. The teaching of a long-haired, semi-effeminate picture of Jesus and the concept of a God composed of invisible spirit was not intellectually satisfying to them. It was all a colossal mystery. In the vanity of their self-professed scholarly minds they tried to evade the mystery entirely on the basis of materialism. They appeased their curiosity by attempting to work out a solution to the mystery of origins, existence, and life by reasoning out a self-satisfying, materialistic explanation.

Don't We Have a Constitution, Not a King?
As the nation focused on whether Congress would exercise its constitutional duty to cut funding for the war, Bush quietly issued an unconstitutional bombshell that went virtually unnoticed by the corporate media.
The National Security and Homeland Security Presidential Directive, signed on May 9, 2007, would place all governmental power in the hands of the President and effectively abolish the checks and balances in the Constitution.
If a "catastrophic emergency" -- which could include a terrorist attack or a natural disaster -- occurs, Bush's new directive says: "The President shall lead the activities of the Federal Government for ensuring constitutional government."
What about the other two co-equal branches of government? The directive throws them a bone by speaking of a "cooperative effort" among the three branches, "coordinated by the President, as a matter of comity with respect to the legislative and judicial branches and with proper respect for the constitutional separation of powers." The Vice-President would help to implement the plans.

WASHINGTON - The government warned consumers on Friday to avoid using toothpaste made in China because it may contain a poisonous chemical used in antifreeze.
Out of caution, the Food and Drug Administration said, people should throw away toothpaste with labeling that says it was made in China. The FDA is concerned that these products may contain diethylene glycol.
