Police Find Explosive Device in Second Car in London

UK-carbombLONDON — Police thwarted a car bomb attack Friday in London's bustling nightclub and theater district, defusing a crude explosive device made of gasoline, propane gas and nails after an ambulance crew spotted smoke coming from a green Mercedes outside a nightclub. Hours later, police confirmed that a second car bomb was found in the center of the city.

The bomb in the city's theater district was powerful enough to have caused "significant injury or loss of life" — possibly killing hundreds, British anti-terror police chief Peter Clarke said.

A British government official told FOX News that Scotland Yard investigators believed that bomb near Piccadilly Circus was to be triggered remotely.

Fish population on the brink

fish populationExperts report downward spiral of marine species, but they say quick action could reverse slide

The world's oceans are under an increasing assault from over-fishing, pollution and global warming that threatens to wipe out vital fisheries and to create a crisis in food supplies before the middle of this century, an international team of scientists warns.

There is still time to reverse the trend, the researchers say, but only if quick action protects depleted fisheries more effectively and saves ocean habitats by creating new marine reserves.

German Europe

GERMAN-EUROPEWARSAW/BERLIN/BRU SSELS/LONDON(Own Report) - The power struggle for German voting dominance in the EU Council of Ministers is intensifying in advance of today's summit conference. At issue are the rules of the proposed EU constitution which give a disproportionate increase of power for Berlin. The German government is intent on forcing this through at any price whilst Warsaw attempts to resist the increasing disempowerment of the smaller EU member states. The Polish foreign minister's representative for bilateral negotiations with the German government, Mariusz Musczynski, said "At the moment, Germany appears to be striving only for power in the EU". On account of its resistance, German politicians and EU representatives are threatening Poland with reduction in its EU subsidies. A strategy paper by high-ranking Social Democrat MPs made clear exactly what the aims of German policy are. They demand the creation of a European army, removing the ability of nations to make decisions about peace or war. Atomic weapons are included. The Polish commentator Piotr Buras wrote this concerning the critical negotiations "The dilemma of a European Germany or of a German Europe, which exercised European capitals during the Nineties, is no longer an empty form of words".

The case of the disappearing Great Lake

BARAGA, Mich. — "Where did the water go?" asks Ted Shalifor, manager of a marina and campground on Lake Superior's Chippewa Indian Reservation.

greatlakes

The water on Lake Superior is so low that he couldn't put his docks in the water this year. Where he used to see water, he now sees sandbars.

Lake Superior, the world's largest freshwater lake, has dropped to its lowest level in 81 years. The water is 20 inches below average and a foot lower than just a year ago.

Secularist Europe Silences Pro-Lifers and Creationists

Last week, a German court sentenced a 55-year old Lutheran pastor to one year in jail for “Volksverhetzung” (incitement of the people) because he compared the killing of the unborn in contemporary Germany to the holocaust.

Next week, the Council of Europe is going to vote on a resolution imposing Darwinism as Europe’s official ideology. The European governments are asked to fight the expression of creationist opinions, such as young earth and intelligent design theories. According to the Council of Europe these theories are “undemocratic” and “a threat to human rights.”

Without legalized abortion the number of German children would increase annually by at least 150,000 – which is the number of legal abortions in birth dearth Germany. Pastor Johannes Lerle compared the killing of the unborn to the killing of the Jews in Auschwitz during the Second World War. On 14 June, a court in Erlangen ruled that, in doing so, the pastor had “incited the people” because his statement was a denial of the holocaust of the Jews in Nazi-Germany. Hence, Herr Lerle was sentenced to one year in jail. Earlier, he had already spent eight months in jail for calling abortionists “professional killers” – an allegation which the court ruled to be slanderous because, according to the court, the unborn are not humans.

The International Space Station Expands Again

The developing International Space Station (ISS) has changed its appearance again. During the past week, the Space Shuttle Atlantis visited the ISS and added pieces of the Integrated Truss Structure that mirrored those added in September 2006, including a second impressively long array of solar panels. The entire array of expansive solar panels are visible at the edges of the above image taken by the Shuttle Atlantis Crew after leaving the ISS to return to Earth. The world's foremost space outpost can be seen developing over the past several years by comparing the above image to past images. Also visible above are many different types of modules, a robotic arm, another impressive set of solar panels, and a supply ship. Construction began on the ISS in 1998.

Glacial Lake Missing

missing lake

SANTIAGO June 20--A lake in southern Chile has mysteriously disappeared, prompting speculation the ground has simply opened up and swallowed it whole.

The five-acre glacial lake in Chile's southern Andes was situated in the Magallanes region in Patagonia and was fed by water, mostly from melting glaciers.

It had a surface area of between 4 and 5 hectares (10-12 acres) about the size of 10 soccer pitches.

More Rain Forecast for Texas, Oklahoma After Days of Flooding

texas-floodingFORT WORTH, Texas — Flood-weary residents of Texas and Oklahoma had no reprieve Friday as more rain fell in a region where two weeks of storms have swollen rivers and lakes beyond their limits.

Thousands of people have been forced from their homes, though some residents were holding out, saying conditions are no worse than floods they've weathered before

A state of emergency was in place for all of Oklahoma on Friday, and flood watches and warnings were posted for river communities. A flood watch was in effect for 28 counties in Texas, where the storms have been blamed for at least 11 deaths.

Possibly Tainted Fish From China Detained by FDA for Inspection

china-fish-farmWASHINGTON — Farmed seafood joined tires, toothpaste and toy trains on the list of tainted and defective products from China that could be hazardous to a person's health.

Federal health officials said Thursday that they were detaining three types of Chinese fish -- catfish, basa and dace -- as well as shrimp and eel after repeated testing has turned up contamination with drugs unapproved in the United States for use in farmed seafood.

The officials said there was no immediate health risk and stopped short of ordering an outright ban.

The Food and Drug Administration announcement was only the latest in an expanding series of problems with imported Chinese products that seemingly permeate U.S. society.

EU leaders scrape treaty deal at 11th hour

angela-merkelEUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS - After a marathon round of talks, the EU has finally agreed the outline of a new treaty for the bloc with formal intergovernmental negotiations to start on 23 July.

At around 05:00 local time on Saturday morning - following a full day and a half of tense discussion - a triumphant Angela Merkel, German chancellor, announced to press that a deal had been struck and that Europe would be able to move out the "reflection" phase it has been in since the draft EU constitution was rejected two years ago.

e-mail

pentagonA hacker has managed to penetrate one of the Pentagon's e-mail systems, leading officials to take up to 1,500 accounts offline.

The e-mail system did not contain classified information relating to military operations, a spokesman said.

The Pentagon says it rebuffs hundreds of attempted attacks on its computer systems each day.

The Peak Oil Crisis: Approaching The Cliff

oil-pipelineLast weekend across southern South Dakota the pumps went dry. Gas terminals from Sioux Falls to Yankton to Sioux City were empty. “There is simply not enough fuel coming down the pipeline into the delivery system” said a BP station owner. Eventually the tankers were sent to Nebraska to find gas. A minor glitch in the distribution? Possibly, but more likely a harbinger of more serious problems to come.

Meanwhile, I would like to tell you that Congress, which has been debating energy bills for the last two weeks, is getting ready to pass legislation that will make our lives easier during the troubled years ahead. Sadly, I cannot. From their public pronouncements and posturing, it is unlikely more than a dozen members of Congress have the slightest idea of what 2007 energy legislation should be trying to accomplish in an urgent manner.

Hypocrisy That Undermines Civilization

There is only a thin veneer that separates civilization from man's innate barbarity.

ThucydidesSome 2,500 years ago the historian Thucydides once warned us about the irony of revolutionaries and insurrectionists destroying this fragile patina of culture, as if they themselves might be exempt from ever wanting it back again.

Yet no sooner, he warned, have such outsiders torn down the system of law than they are in need of it themselves when they assume power and the responsibility of governance. Even the worst terrorist apparently wants his wife and kids to be safe — and able to drink clean water when turning on the faucet. The trick apparently is to blow up the neighborhood's electric pylon while still finding enough light and power to assemble an IED device.

Human-MindWhat Science Can’t Discover about the HUMAN MIND

THINK! Will any human person still be alive
on this Earth in another five or ten years?
The number one problem we all face today
is that of HUMAN SURVIVAL!
WHY has the human mind produced such
AWESOMEmoder n progress, yet remains
HELPLESS in the face of such appalling EVILS?
The answer to this baffling enigma lies in
the HUMAN MIND. In the following pages you
will learn what psychologists and scientists do
not know about the HUMAN MIND!

WHY CANNOT THE GREATEST MINDS SOLVE world problems? Scientists have said, “Given sufficient knowledge, and we shall solve all human problems and cure all our evils.”

However, as the world’s fund of knowledge rapidly increases, so too do humanity’s evils. WHY? Is something wrong with the human MIND? Is something MISSING? There most certainly is a MISSING DIMENSION in human knowledge. A human manufacturer sends along with the instrument or device he manufactures an INSTRUCTION BOOKLET describing what his product is intended to do with full directions for accomplishing its purpose. The most perfect mechanism ever designed and made is the marvelous mind and body that is MAN. And it is also only natural that our Maker sent along His INSTRUCTION MANUAL—revealing for our good what we ARE, WHY we are, where we are going, and what is the way.

Do Pets Really Have Personality?

Think Your Pet has Personality? Science Didn't. Until Now - Scientists are puzzled by findings that suggest personality traits are not consistent within species.

dog-personalityShare The great Russian scientist Ivan Pavlov was one of the first to observe personality differences in the dogs he studied in his lab during the late 1800s. He could make all of them salivate at the sound of a bell in anticipation of food, but some of them just seemed to get into it more than others.

Down through the years a number of other scientists have discovered what seem to be personality traits in various animals, but the question of animal personalities has largely been ignored by science. Possibly because personality has long been considered distinctively human.
